What is DAS

The Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) is a government-run debt management tool which allows a debtor to repay their debts through a debt payment programme (DPP).

The  DPP allows the debtor to pay off their debts over an extended period of time whilst giving them protection from their creditors taking action against them to recover the debt in the DPP.

The DPP can last for any reasonable length of time and if approved will freeze all interest, fees and charges on the debt included, resulting in them being written off when the DPP is fully completed.

What are the benefits of DAS?

 DAS offers debtors:

  • advice on managing debt
  • protection from court enforcement, bankruptcy and loss of their home (provided they keep up mortgage/rent payments)
  • breathing space and extra time to pay
  • opportunity to repay their debts over an extended period of time through a debt payment programme (DPP)
  • facility to make regular payments to a payments distributor who deals with all their creditors on their behalf
  • the freezing of interest, fees and charges on the debt, from the date the money adviser or DAS Administrator submits the application to creditors for approval (and the application if approved).  These charges are written off on completion of the DPP
  • the chance to demonstrate that they have gained valuable money management skills

DAS is also normally free.  DAS approved money advisers at CABs or local authorities normally provide free advice.  However, some other approved money advisers may charge a fee for their service.

DAS offers creditors:

  • the knowledge that the debtor has actively sought money advice
  • an assurance that the debtor’s income and expenditure has been assessed by an approved money adviser.
  • the knowledge that the debtor is co-operating and wishes to repay their debt
  • the assurance that the DAS Administrator takes into account any comments from creditors when considering  the DPP
  • a regular payment towards the debt owed to them
  • 90% or more of the debt will be repaid if the DPP is completed
  • No additional debt recovery costs involved
  • The DAS Administrator is oversees the DPP
